Britt Wray

Author, Independent media producer/host, Co-founder of the Aurator. PhD candidate at University of Copenhagen. Talks on Biotech, Crispr Transhumanism and the Future Design of life.

Britt Wray is a science storyteller with a passion for public engagement around emerging biotechnologies, such as synthetic biology and gene-editing. She is fascinated by recent advancements in genetic and genomic sciences that allow us to not only understand life at the sub-molecular scale, but directly shape it as well. Voraciously curious and highly inquisitive in all of her projects, Britt drills into the scientific culture that surrounds new biotechnologies and weaves what she finds into clear, compelling narratives for non-specialist audiences. As a media producer, writer, and host, she transmits her stories on the airwaves, in print, and online.

Britt’s first book  – Rise of the Necrofauna Are We Ready to Reverse Extinction? – is about the new science of de-extinction, which aims to revive extinct species using advanced biotechnologies. It will be published in the Fall of 2017 by Greystone Books and the David Suzuki Foundation. Professor George Church of Harvard University, who is working on reviving the woolly mammoth in his lab, penned the foreword. Britt is currently completing a PhD in science communication with a focus on synthetic biology at the University of Copenhagen, for which she created a novel interactive public engagement platform called Aurator (www.aurator.org). She is also the Creator/Director of a forthcoming interactive documentary series about personal genomics, produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

Before moving to Denmark, Britt was working as a radio producer and host on a variety of national radio shows at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), such as Spark, Think About It, IDEAS and Radio 3. Britt’s other radio work can been heard on New York Public Radio (WNYC), National Public Radio (NPR) and the Radiotopia Network podcast Love and Radio.

A researcher and educator, Britt has lectured on biotech, public engagement and science communication at the University of Oxford, University of Toronto, University of Copenhagen, University of Warwick, and York University, among others. Aside from her PhD, she holds a Bachelor of Science (Hon.) in Biology and a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design. She has been a Visiting Scholar at Goldsmiths College University of London and the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University..
